There is something about Lana Del Rey which encapsulates the trend in youth counter-culture to take influence from the 1960’s & 70’s and add a modern flare, in fact some would say that she is the queen of such a trend, and listening to “Love” makes it difficult to argue otherwise. Finding its strength in its cinematic beauty, “Love” swells with an atmosphere that I can only liken to driving with the top down during sunset. The vibe is created by humming strings, subtle cosmic synths, thudding drums, and Lana’s distinguished breathy voice which feels as though it is coming from another room. It’s that feeling of late summer nights and of young love that seems to defy space and time, the latter of which is Lana’s focus. In the lyrics she croons “it’s enough to be young and in love” while visuals of cars in space play out before our eyes. Although the song seems right up Lana’s alley, taking inspiration from her favorite subject, love, it sees Lana reflecting back on her youth instead of speaking from within its rose-colored bubble. She warns that despite how overwhelming life may be it’s worth living, while also implying that there is a difference between appreciating our youth and lingering in it.

Life is so overwhelming at the moment, mostly in part because I am moving from Ohio to D.C. next month! I am excited for the change, but dealing with apartment hunting and finding roommates is making my head swirl. While this tornado is plowing through my life, I have been listening to some arguably fantastic music from the like of Rag 'n' Bone Man, Sampha, Maggie Rogers, and Spring King. Enjoy the 5th installment of Smoke & Synth below:
p.s. the playlist may grow as the month rolls on because new music is always popping up
